POSITIVE DISCIPLINE CLASSES AND WORKSHOPS ARE UNIQUE
• No boring lectures
• Participants “get into the child’s world” through experiential activities to learn what really works and what doesn’t work.
• Participants practice new skills for encouraging respectful behavior (for children and adults).
• Parents/Teachers Problem-Solving Steps provides an opportunity for a parent or teacher to present a “real” challenge and experience a process of encouragement and solutions. Everyone learns.
The Positive Discipline Philosophy
Positive Discipline (based on the work of Alfred Adler and Rudolf Dreikurs) is for parents and teachers who are looking for skills that do not include punishment or rewards to encourage their children to think for themselves, feel capable, become more responsible, and have a greater respect for themselves and others.
Five Criteria for Positive Discipline
1. Helps children feel a sense of connection (Belonging and Significance)
2. Is kind and firm at the same time (Respectful and encouraging)
3. Is effective long-term (See the following two criteria)
4. Teaches valuable social and life skills for good character (Respect, concern for others, problem-solving, cooperation)
5. Invites children to discover how capable they are
What Others Are Saying
"I have implemented several tools from PD in my own family and have seen the extraordinary changes in my children in just a short time. They are developing an attitude of competence and are doing more things for themselves. They participate more in everyday responsibilities and are developing their feelings of capability and confidence. They are now getting themselves ready for school in the morning and bed at night by following the routine charts we created together. Historically, mornings and evenings were the most stressful times of the day. They are making many of their own snacks, cleaning up and taking care of their own things, learning to “cool off” independently and go to their “chill-out spots” and they seem to be resolving more of their conflicts independent of my involvement. Our family is learning to manage problems with mutual respect and finding solutions that work for everyone involved. I now want to spread the Positive Discipline word."
